Homework

Homework assignments are sent home on the first day of each school week in a large homework folder. They should be returned to school every Friday in the homework folder. There will be 3-5 activities for the week. These activities are designed to reinforce concepts that are being taught in the classroom.
In addition to the formal homework assignments, we ask that you read to your child for at least 10 minutes every night.
Homework envelopes should come back to school on Friday even if your child was unable to complete the assignments. If you know your child will be absent, please return the envelope on the child’s last day before absence. Please be sure your child brings their backpack everyday.
Handwriting

At Saint Apollinaris Catholic School we use the D’Nealian style of printing. We believe that this style of printing helps to ease their transition to cursive writing in the future. We also put a lot of emphasis on correct pencil holding. Please correct your child at home if you see them holding their pencil incorrectly.
Baskets

Once a week your child will bring home a basket containing a stuffed animal, several books and a journal. Please spend some quiet time sharing the animal and books with your child. This basket is a reward for good behavior as well as part of the week’s homework assignment. Brothers, sisters, friends, etc should not use the baskets.
After you and your child have read the books and enjoyed the animal, please help your child make an entry in the journal. They may draw a picture of the animal, a favorite part of the story, or dictate something about the basket experience. Please date the entry and have your child print their name on the journal page. Baskets are not sent home on Fridays or holiday weeks.
Your child should take good care of the basket and return the basket and all of its contents the following day. If your child forgets to return their basket the next day, they will not be able to take a basket the following week. Not returning baskets prevents other children from enjoying them.
Sharing

Our daily curriculum is very full and we do not allow a formal sharing time. However, on Fridays we welcome items from nature, or books/items related to themes we are studying in class.
