First Holy Communion
The First Communion Program is a parent and child-oriented program for baptized second grade Catholic children. Parent Meetings include the presentation of the material related to the children’s lessons by the Religious Education staff. The meetings provide information about activities for all parents and their children during home sessions, detail the coming special Masses for the children, and provide an opportunity for parents to experience further spiritual growth and development. Children’s Sessions will take place during regular religion classes. Teachers will work with children on their understanding of God’s presence in their family, in the Church and in the Eucharist.
Themes of the lessons will be carried over into special Masses and Prayer Services in which children will play a special role.
Parents will review their child’s experiences with them and develop the ideas that have been presented in the theme of a particular lesson.
Baptized Catholic children in St. Apollinaris Catholic School receive preparation for this sacrament in the 2nd grade class. The children are given the opportunity to receive Penance before receiving the Eucharist for the first time. During Lent, the 4th graders receive extensive study of the Sacrament of Penance and there are special Parent Sessions, culminating in a special Penance Service for pupils and parents. Pupils in grades 5 through 8 are given opportunity to receive the Sacrament of Penance as a class.
