Congratulation to our 2005 Decathlon team: State Champions!

Our 2005 Academic Decathlon Team placed 1st at the California State Championships, an all-day academic competition recently held in Los Angeles. Representing the Santa Rosa Diocese, the St. Apollinaris team competed with California Diocesan champions from Fresno, Los Angeles, Orange, Sacramento, San Bernardino, San Diego and San Francisco in eight individual events and two team competitions. With well over 250 Catholic elementary schools in California, being named State Champions is a significant achievement for the 7th and 8th grade team.

Individually, Nick placed 1st in California in Social Studies with a score of 960 out of 1,000 pts. Paige took 2nd in Math with a 920 and Dustin was 2nd in Science with a 900. The team was 2nd in Logic with a score of 5,933 out of 8,000, a high score for a difficult test of 20 questions requiring varied problem-solving skills. In the SuperQuiz competition, which consisted of 50 questions from the areas of Africa, Health, Literature, Lives of the Popes, and Mozart, the team tied for 1st place by answering 43 out of 50 questions correctly. Overall, the St. Apollinaris Team’s score of 18,413 out of 24,000 topped Junipero Serra School from Rancho Santa Margarita by 537 pts.

St. Apollinaris School has represented the Santa Rosa Diocese at the State Championships in six out of eight years of competition, was named State Champs in 2001 and 2005, and is now the only California school to win the Academic Decathlon twice.

2005 St. Apollinaris Academic Decathletes win Diocese Competition

For the 10 St. A's Decathletes, Saturday was a day of nerves and excitement. After six months of meeting together and studying independently, and after 4 hours of brain taxing quizzes and test, St. Apollinaris won the 2005 Junior High Academic Decathlon. Their nerves were quickly calmed once they received the 20 logic questions--ranging in scope from brain twisting word problems, math problems. With the Logic portion of the day behind them, eight students went to separate rooms to test their wits, head to head, on the individual subjects. Five St. A's students place in the top three in this category: Dustin: first place in Science, Mark: first place in English and Spelling, Paige: first place in Math. Jeff: first place in Religion, and Nick: second place in Social Studies!

The day ended with the 50 Super Quiz questions from 5 categories, ranging in scope from the History of the Popes to African Geography! The St. A's team lead this event, answering 45 questions correctly. With this victory, the St. Apollinaris Team was awarded first place, exemplifing a the acheivements of a unified team.

The Team will now advance to the State Championships in Los Angeles in May. Good luck St. A's!
