St. Apollinaris Girls Capture 2009 N.I.T. Hoops Title

In recent action the St. A’s 8th grade girls basketball team won the 20th Napa Invitational Tournament, hosted by St. John’s Lutheran School. It was the first title won by a St. A’s girl’s team in the tourney’s history.

The Shamrocks (10-1) won their opening round game against Zion-Anaheim 45-30. Zion took an early lead but St. A’s fought back to take a 19-17 lead at half time. In the third quarter it was all St. A’s, as their aggressive, full-court pressing defense forced numerous turnovers that led to easy lay-ups. St. A’s outscored Zion-Anaheim 16-3 to take a 15 point lead entering the fourth quarter. All twelve players contributed in the victory. Michelle DeBlauw (12 points, 11 rebounds, 5 steals, 5 assists), Vendela Aguayo (8 points, 4 assists, 3 steals), Katelyn Leveque (7 rebounds, 3 steals, 2 assists, 2 points), and Bridget McLoughlin (4 points, 2 rebounds) led the way for the Shamrocks.

In the second round St. A’s faced cross-town and league rival Blue Oak. A short-handed Blue Oak squad battled hard, but was unable to contend with the relentless pressure defense applied by St. A’s. The Shamrocks took a 27-6 lead at the half and cruised to a 46-14 victory. St. A’s was led by Michelle DeBlauw (10 points, 10 rebounds, 8 steals, 6 assists), Olivia Henderson (10 points, 9 rebounds), Emilie Dolan (8 points, 4 steals), and Natalie Slavonia (4 points, 10 rebounds, 4 steals).

St. A’s faced the St. John’s Lutheran Eagles in the championship game. The Shamrocks got off to a quick start and led 16-1 at the end of the first period. St. A’s went cold in the second and third quarters, however, and the Eagles stormed back and trailed only 25-21 at the end of the third period. St. John’s was able to cut the lead to two points in the final quarter, but St. A’s converted on 5 of 6 free throws late in the game to earn a hard-fought 34-30 victory. Emilie Dolan (12 points, 7 steals), Michelle DeBlauw (6 points, 11 steals, 9 rebounds), Olivia Henderson (6 points, 3 rebounds), and Natalie Slavonia (4 points, 6 rebounds, 4 steals) led the Shamrocks.
